Do you run a law office management software suite on a Linux server? Right now I use Zimbra running on Ubuntu Server 9.04 to handle my mail, contacts and docs. I would like to have something that integrates time tracking and billing into one nice solution. Just wondering if you've come across any open source software that is linux friendly for such a purpose.
All I have found that is currently FUNCTIONAL are web based applications like RocketMatter and Clio. I like keeping my data and not having to be online to get to it. I've also been using Linux and Open Source long enough that I've gotten used to "free" so the monthly charge isn't all that appealing either.
I'm glad to hear you are using Zimbra. I may implement it eventually, but right now Evolution, OpenOffice and Dropbox are handling those functions for me.
For what it's worth, I have run across a company or two that has batted around the idea of building a practice management application for Linux, but I don't know of any company or developer who even has an Alpha stage application yet.
Of note, there is Law Office Essentials on Sourceforge that is probably pre-Alpha. That developer, Sean, would welcome help if someone wanted to work with him on that project.
There's also some other similar applications on Sourceforge that have been developed internationally. I've not found anything there that was helpful to me, or that I really felt like I could trust.
I've been meaning to install and test this Legal Case Management software, but have not gotten around to it yet... http://www.lcm.ngo-bg.org/article37.html I believe it was developed internationally - is it one of the packages you referred to, Zale?
Zale, what other packages have you found? I'm thinking about using VirtualBox to set up an Ubuntu Server test-bed to see if any of them are worth deploying when I join my wife and father-in-law's firm. I really don't have time to "roll my own" - but it'd certainly be nice to keep track of a few things pertaining to clients.
There's one more that was of German origin, I think, that I can't find anymore. Seems like it was Chronos, or Kronos or something like that. I can't find it anymore, so I'm guessing it died or just went away.
I'm glad to see that you are considering using Linux and open source software in your law office. The trend is growing. Feel free to look around the blog and let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, and there's a few others like it.
